Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Skip the day-trip from Geneva.

Annecy is 45 min from Geneva by train and most visitors come for half a day. The Vieille Ville is photogenic in 90 minutes - but you miss the lake, the Château, the Semnoz panorama, the cheese caves, and the evening light on the canals. Stay at least one night.

02

The lake is the point.

The Old Town is photogenic, but the lake is the destination. Cleanest big lake in Europe, swimmable June-September. Public beaches free. Pedalo, paddleboard, and small boat rentals from the Pâquier waterfront. Hire a small motorboat (no licence needed up to 6hp) and drift the south end for a few hours.

03

Cycle the lake loop.

40 km flat path, mostly car-free. Half-day to circle the whole thing with lunch breaks. Rent at the Old Town agencies €15-25/day. E-bikes €30-40 for the lazier. The east shore (Veyrier-du-Lac → Talloires → Doussard) has the cliffs and the wild beaches; the west shore (Sevrier → Saint-Jorioz) has more villages.

04

Sunday Vieille Ville market.

Sunday morning. The Old Town transforms into a covered market - cheese, charcuterie, fresh trout from the lake, Savoyard wines. Buy lunch ingredients and picnic on the Pâquier waterfront. Tuesday and Friday have smaller markets too.

05

Eat tartiflette only in winter.

The famous Savoyard reblochon-and-potato dish is heavy. In July it's wrong; locals eat lake fish and salads then. Save tartiflette and fondue for evenings October-March. Try omble chevalier (Arctic char from the lake), perche aux amandes (perch with almonds), tarte aux myrtilles (blueberry tart).

06

Pair with Chamonix or Geneva.

Chamonix (90 min east) for Mont Blanc and serious alpine. Geneva (45 min west) for the lake-jet, the UN, and onward flights. Lyon (1h 45 south-west) for the food and the river city. Annecy is the heart of a 3-4 day Alps trip.
