Hidden gem: Jerusalem Chapel

A 15th-century chapel built by a Bruges merchant family who'd been to Jerusalem. Skull-carved tomb, stained glass, free entry. Most tourists never find it. North of the centre.

Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Day-trippers leave by 5pm.

Bruges fills with day-trippers from Brussels and the coast. By 17:00 they're gone. Stay overnight - the old town empties, the lights come on, swans glide. That's the real Bruges.

02

Belgian beer has codes.

Trappist (made by monks - Westvleteren, Chimay, Westmalle, Rochefort, Achel, Orval). Abbey (made by breweries but Trappist-style). Lambic (Brussels-area sour). Tripel = ~9%, Quadrupel = ~11%. Don't chug.

03

Frites are not French.

Belgian invention. Twice-fried, served in a paper cone with mayonnaise (or andalouse, samourai, joppiesaus). Try Chez Vincent or Frituur 1900. Skip everywhere on the Markt.

04

Bicycle is the way.

Bruges is bike-friendly and flat. Rent at Koffieboontje for the day. Cycle along the canals to Damme - a flat 4 km. Or out to the windmills.

05

Best seasons: April–June, September–October.

Spring tulips and quiet streets. Autumn for golden canals. December has a Christmas market and ice rink on Markt. Avoid July-August and Sundays in April when day-trippers swarm.

06

Tipping: round up.

5-10% if you loved it. Service is included. Tip in cash so the waiter actually gets it.
