Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Check the 'tablecloth' before booking Table Mountain.

The cable car closes in high wind and fog. Cape Town locals call the cloud over the mountain a 'tablecloth'. Check tablemountain.net the morning of your booking - they tweet status updates by 08:00. Hiking Platteklip Gorge is the backup if the cable car is closed. Book a 'flexi-ticket' to reschedule day-of.

02

Uber for everything after dark.

Cape Town safety is fine in tourist areas during the day; after dark, Uber. The MyCiti bus is reasonable for daytime V&A and Sea Point but ends by 20:00. Renting a car gives you Cape Point and the winelands freely; park in secure lots only. Don't walk between districts at night.

03

Stay in the City Bowl or V&A.

City Bowl (around Long Street, Bree Street, Kloof Street) for the restaurants and walking access to Bo-Kaap. V&A for the harbour and family-safe walking. Camps Bay for beach holidays. Constantia for vineyard quiet. The townships (Cape Flats) are not where you'd stay; Stellenbosch (45 min away) is a quieter wine-country base.

04

Cape Point + penguins is a long day.

Self-drive: leave 08:00, return 18:00. Hout Bay seal cruise + Chapman's Peak Drive (R55 toll) + Cape Point (R250 entry, R85 funicular) + Boulders penguins. Day tours $40-70 cover all this. Don't try to do it after 14:00 - you'll run out of light.

05

Wine tram beats winery hopping.

The Franschhoek Wine Tram (R280/day) hops between 12 wineries on a tram + bus circuit. Easier than driving and tasting. Stellenbosch Wine Routes Bicycle Tours similar concept. Or hire a sober driver for a private 4-winery day - R1,500-2,500 per group.

06

Eat the local food.

Bunny chow (bread loaf hollowed for curry), boerewors (sausage), bobotie (spiced mince), Cape Malay curries. Test Kitchen, La Colombe (Michelin), Africa Café for tasting menus. Mama Africa on Long Street for the budget version. Marco's African Place for the township-cuisine showcase.

Questions

Frequently asked

Five to seven days minimum. Day 1: Table Mountain + V&A Waterfront. Day 2: Bo-Kaap, City Bowl, Company Garden, Robben Island. Day 3: Cape Peninsula day - Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak, Cape Point, Boulders Beach penguins. Day 4: Cape Winelands - Stellenbosch + Franschhoek. Day 5: Camps Bay, Lion's Head sunrise hike. Add 2-3 more days for the Garden Route.
R450 (~$24) adult one-way, R650 return (2026). Online booking saves R50 and skips the queue. Operating hours weather-dependent - heavy wind or fog closes the cable car (the 'tablecloth' on top is the indicator from below). Hiking up via Platteklip Gorge or Skeleton Gorge takes 2-3 hours, free.
Selectively. Tourist areas (V&A, Camps Bay, City Bowl by day, Bo-Kaap) are safe. Township areas and isolated areas after dark are not - don't walk alone after 19:00 outside well-lit zones. Uber is the standard for everything after dark. Don't display electronics in traffic. Cape Town safety is reasonable when you follow the same rules locals do.
Yes. Mandela's prison cell, the political prison narrative. R600 (~$33) for the half-day tour from V&A Waterfront. Ferry + island walk + bus + ex-prisoner guide. Book online 1-2 weeks ahead in peak. Ferry can cancel in rough seas; the operator reschedules. Allow a full half-day.
Self-drive is the freest option (R250 entry to Cape Point + Cape of Good Hope). Day tours from Cape Town $40-70/person, full day, often include Boulders Beach penguins + Hout Bay seal cruise + Chapman's Peak drive. Hire car (R350-500/day) lets you stop at viewpoints and Cape Town's best vineyards on the way back.
February-April (harvest) and September-November (spring). Stellenbosch is the classic - 30 wineries, 45 min drive from Cape Town. Franschhoek for the French Huguenot history + the Wine Tram (R280/day hop-on-hop-off). Constantia (within Cape Town) for an afternoon - 8 vineyards, 20 min from City Bowl, oldest in South Africa (1685).
Yes. Download a walk over Wi-Fi at your hotel before you head out. South African mobile data is okay but roaming is expensive. iWander runs entirely on-device once downloaded.
