Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Crossing the road takes practice.

Hanoi has more scooters than people. Crossing requires moving slowly, predictably, and never stopping or running. Step off the curb at a steady pace and the scooters flow around you like water around a stone. Don't lock eyes with drivers; just move. Locals will sometimes physically guide you across the first time.

02

Egg coffee is the secret.

Cà phê trứng - whipped egg yolk + condensed milk + coffee, served warm. Hanoi invented it in the 1940s when milk was scarce. Cafe Giang on Nguyen Huu Huan (the original family). Cafe Dinh on Le Thai To (above the lake). Both serve in tiny upstairs balconies. Trust us.

03

Stay in the Old Quarter.

The Old Quarter has 36 streets of trade-named alleys (Silver, Silk, Tin, Sugar, etc.) and the centre of the action. Stay one block off the busiest streets to sleep. Boutique hotels in restored shophouses €€-€€€: Hanoi Marvellous, Apricot, La Sinfonia del Rey. The Metropole in the French Quarter is the colonial splurge.

04

Train Street is restricted.

Officially closed to tourists since 2019 (renewed 2024). The cafes still serve, the trains still pass, but you need to know one of the cafe owners to be allowed onto the street. Most hotel concierges arrange visits. Or walk the public-access section near the Long Bien bridge. Trains pass roughly 06:00, 09:00, 11:30, 15:00, 19:00, 19:50.

05

Halong Bay overnight beats day trip.

The day-trip from Hanoi (4 hr drive each way, 4 hr on water) is an exhausting marathon. The 2-day/1-night cruise gives you sunset on the karsts, dinner on board, sunrise tai chi, and a kayaking morning. $130-300/person depending on cruise standard. Lan Ha Bay is the quieter, cleaner alternative to Halong proper.

06

Bia hoi is the local night out.

Bia hoi - fresh, lightly fermented beer brewed daily, served at street-corner stools for 6,000-15,000 VND/glass ($0.25-0.60). Bia Hoi Corner (Ta Hien × Luong Ngoc Quyen) is the tourist version. Quan Bia Minh on Hang Buom and the corner of Ngo Bao Khanh are the locals' choice.

Questions

Frequently asked

Three full days plus a Halong Bay overnight. Day 1: Old Quarter + Hoan Kiem Lake. Day 2: Ho Chi Minh complex (Mausoleum, Pagoda, House) + Temple of Literature + French Quarter. Day 3: West Lake + street food crawl + Train Street at coffee time. Add 1-2 nights Halong Bay or Sapa for a complete northern Vietnam visit.
The Old Quarter is walkable but chaotic - 36 streets, each historically dedicated to one trade. Crossing the road takes practice (walk slowly, predictably, scooters flow around you). The lakes (Hoan Kiem, West) are circular walks. Crossing between Old Quarter and French Quarter is a 10-min walk. Use Grab or Be (Vietnamese app) for longer hops.
A narrow residential street in the Old Quarter where a working railway runs centimetres from cafe terraces, twice a day. The street is officially closed to tourists in 2025 but cafe owners still let known visitors sit and watch the train pass. Order a coffee, sit on the plastic stools, watch the train arrive. Best evening run around 19:00.
Most travellers book a cruise package from Hanoi (1-3 nights) which includes round-trip transfer. 2-day/1-night cruises $130-300 per person. Pick a cruise on Lan Ha Bay instead of Halong Bay - quieter, less crowded, same karst landscape. Public bus to Halong City + ferry is possible but slow and inefficient.
Once. Free, 30-60 min queue. Strict dress code (no shorts, no sleeveless), no cameras inside, silence. Closed Mondays and Fridays year-round, plus October-November for Ho Chi Minh's annual embalming maintenance. The Mausoleum is part of a wider complex - One Pillar Pagoda, Stilt House, Ba Dinh Square - allow 2 hours total.
Noi Bai (HAN) is 30 km north. Grab/Be car 350,000-400,000 VND (~$15), 45 min. Airport bus 86 to Old Quarter 45,000 VND, 50 min, drops at Hanoi Opera House. Vietnam Airlines minibus 40,000 VND. Avoid white-taxi touts inside terminal. Order Grab/Be from inside before walking outside.
Yes. Download a walk over Wi-Fi at your hotel before you head out. Mobile data in Vietnam is cheap (Viettel/Mobifone SIM 200,000 VND/month). iWander runs entirely on-device once downloaded.
