What kind of walk do you fancy?

Six shortcuts to the New York you didn't know you wanted to see.

🍕

If you want to eat like a New Yorker

Pizza by the slice at Joe's (West Village), Scarr's (LES), L&B Spumoni (Brooklyn). Bagels at Russ & Daughters. Pastrami at Katz's. Skip Times Square restaurants - they're tourist traps.

Our hidden gem pick: The Cloisters

A medieval European monastery transplanted to the top of Manhattan, in Fort Tryon Park. Free with MoMA ticket. The most beautiful place in New York that tourists never visit.

In the rain

The Met, MoMA, the Whitney, the Guggenheim. Grand Central's ceiling. Chelsea Market's food halls. The New York Public Library. The whole subway system is shelter, and stops near everything.

Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it. Six tips, from a local.

01

Avenues run north-south, streets east-west.

20 blocks = 1 mile. Manhattan walks faster than you think. From Times Square to the Village is 25 minutes on foot.

02

Skip Times Square (or speed through it).

Everyone hates Times Square, including New Yorkers. See it for the lights once, then never return. Bryant Park behind it is the better hangout.

03

Tip 20%.

Sit-down restaurants, bars, taxis. Tipping isn't optional - servers are paid below minimum wage and rely on it. 18% is the floor. 20% is standard. 25% if it was good.

04

The subway is fastest, but walk if you can.

Anything under 20 blocks (a mile), walk. Anything across town, walk. The subway saves time on long north-south trips. Crosstown buses are slow but scenic.

05

Best seasons: April–June, September–October.

July-August: humid and brutal. December: cold but magical. January-February: bring real boots. Spring is short and beautiful. Fall is the best month.

06

The High Line is best at sunrise.

2.3 km of elevated railway-turned-park, end to end in 45 minutes. Crowded after 11am. At 7am it's empty, golden, and one of the best views in Manhattan.
