Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Stockholm is 14 islands, not one city.

The water shapes everything. Cross bridges, hop ferries (SL pass covers them), and the city makes sense. Most visits stay on five islands.

02

Fika is non-negotiable.

Coffee and a cinnamon bun, twice a day, around 10am and 3pm. Vete-Katten (since 1928), Drop Coffee, Café Saturnus for the biggest bun in town.

03

The SL pass covers everything.

Buses, metro, trams, commuter trains, ferries to the archipelago. 24/72-hour passes are the best deal. Buy on the SL app.

04

Reservation culture.

Restaurants get booked solid on weekends. Book a week ahead for anything good. Walk-ins exist for bars and casual cafés - not dinner.

05

Best seasons: May–September.

Midsummer (late June) is magical - light never properly leaves. December is candle season. Avoid mid-January through early March if you hate darkness.

06

Tap water is brilliant.

Stockholm's tap water is from Lake Mälaren and is some of the cleanest in Europe. Don't buy bottled. Take a bottle and refill anywhere.
