Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The things you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Hire a local guide.

$30-50/day for a licensed guide. Strongly recommended - they explain the liturgy, the priesthood, the symbolism. Without one, the churches are visually striking but the religious significance is opaque. Guides cluster at the ticket office. Tip 200 ETB at end of day; they earn it on the climbs.

02

Take shoes off, bring socks.

You enter every church barefoot. The rock-cut floors are cold and gravelly; thick socks save your feet. Shoes off at the entrance, the priest's helper sometimes watches them for a small tip. Slip-ons save constant lacing. Women: long skirt or trousers, headscarf inside (loaned at the door if you forget).

03

Sunday morning mass.

If you can time your visit to be in Lalibela on a Sunday, attend dawn mass at any of the churches - Bete Maryam is the most welcoming. Ethiopian Orthodox liturgy is in Ge'ez (the ancient liturgical language). White-robed pilgrims, drums, kebero chants. Stand respectfully at the back; this isn't a tourist show.

04

Altitude is real.

Lalibela sits at 2,500m. You'll feel it on the church climbs and on the Asheton Maryam trek. Drink water, take it slow the first day, avoid alcohol the night before serious exertion. Coca tea isn't a thing here (that's Andes); locally, hot tea with sugar is the equivalent.

05

Bring cash. Lots of it.

ATMs in Lalibela work but sometimes run out. Bring USD (clean, undamaged notes - dirty notes refused). USD accepted for the entrance ticket; everything else in Birr. Budget $100-150/day with a guide, mid-range hotel, and meals. Hotels Tukul Village and Mountain View are reliable mid-range.

06

Combine with the northern circuit.

The 7-10 day Ethiopian northern circuit: Addis Ababa → Bahir Dar (Lake Tana) → Gondar (castles) → Simien Mountains (trekking) → Lalibela → Axum (ancient capital) → back to Addis. Ethiopian Airlines runs domestic legs cheaply when you fly international with them. Lalibela alone is a long way to fly.

How to visit

Lalibela, sorted in six lines

Tickets, timings, transport - the practical stuff most pages bury.

TICKETS

$50 USD · 5-day pass · cash only.

Foreign adults $50 USD or Birr equivalent. Valid 5 days for all 11 churches. Children under 12 free. Cash only (USD preferred; clean undamaged notes). Pay at the central ticket office on the main road. Guide $30-50/day extra.

HOURS

06:00-12:30, 14:00-18:00.

Most churches close for the midday priest's break - 12:30-14:00. Sunday morning is busiest with pilgrims and the liturgy. Genna (Jan 7) and Timkat (Jan 19) are the major festival days when the churches fill to capacity.

GETTING THERE

Fly from Addis · 1h 30 · ~$200 RT.

Ethiopian Airlines Addis-Lalibela (LLI) 1.5 hrs. Multiple daily flights. Lalibela Airport is 25 km from town - hotels arrange shuttles for $10-15. Driving from Addis: 2 days each way through the highlands - epic but a real expedition.

BASE

Mid-range hotels are good value.

Tukul Village, Mountain View, Maribela are reliable mid-range $40-80/night. Top-end: Lalibela Lodge or Maribela Hotel ($100-180). Budget: Asheton Hotel, $20-30. Hotel staff arrange guides, jeeps, mule treks. Wi-Fi exists but slow; mobile data faster.

DRESS

Shoulders, knees, headscarf, socks.

Shoulders and knees covered always. Women bring a headscarf for inside. Shoes off at every entrance - bring thick socks for the rock floors. Long skirts or trousers. A light scarf in the day bag handles it. Hat for outside - 2,500m altitude sun is strong.

BUNDLE

Northern circuit · 7-10 days.

Addis → Bahir Dar (Lake Tana monasteries) → Gondar (Castles of Fasilides) → Simien Mountains (gelada baboons, trekking) → Lalibela → Axum (Queen of Sheba, obelisks) → back to Addis. Ethiopian Airlines internal flights make this efficient.

Questions

Frequently asked

Two full days. Day 1: Northern cluster (Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Maryam, Bete Golgotha and four others). Day 2: Southern cluster + Bete Giyorgis (the cross-shaped famous one). Add a third day for the satellite monasteries (Asheton Maryam, Yemrehana Krestos cave church). The churches are connected by tunnels and passages - it takes time.
$50 USD or equivalent in Birr (2026), valid 5 days for all 11 churches. Children under 12 free. Buy at the central ticket office on the main road - cash only (USD or Birr both accepted; USD preferred at the better rate). A licensed guide costs $30-50/day, strongly recommended - they explain the priesthood, the icons, and the religious significance.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Epiphany festival, January 19th (Jan 20 leap years), celebrating Christ's baptism. Lalibela is one of the great Timkat destinations - thousands of pilgrims gather, the tabot (replica Ark of the Covenant) processions, all-night chanting at the churches, white-robed crowds. Book accommodation 6+ months ahead. Genna (Ethiopian Christmas, January 7) is similarly important here.
Fly to Lalibela Airport (LLI) - Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa (1.5 hrs, ~$200 RT) or Gondar/Axum on the northern circuit. The airport is 25 km from town; hotels send shuttles ($10-15). Driving from Addis is 2 days each way through Bahir Dar and the highlands - scenic but a real expedition. The northern circuit (Addis → Bahir Dar → Gondar → Lalibela → Axum → Addis) covers Ethiopia's main heritage sites in 7-10 days.
Strict. Shoulders and knees covered; women bring a headscarf for the inside. Shoes off at every church entrance - bring socks (the stone is cold and gravelly). Photography is allowed but not flash; some churches forbid photography of the holiest objects. Most visitors carry a light scarf and slip-on shoes.
Yes - the cross-shaped Church of St George, carved 12 metres into the rock as a Greek cross, is the iconic image of Lalibela. The viewing platform above the church gives the famous aerial photograph. Bete Maryam, Bete Medhane Alem (the largest), and Bete Amanuel are equally important architecturally; pilgrims visit them all.
Yes. Download a walk over Wi-Fi at your hotel before you head out. Signal in Lalibela is okay but mobile data isn't cheap to roam in Ethiopia. iWander runs entirely on-device once downloaded.
