Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

The train is your friend.

The Cinque Terre Express runs Levanto → 5 villages → La Spezia every 15-30 minutes, 4 minutes between adjacent villages. With the Treno MS Card you ride unlimited. Hike one stretch and train the next; eat lunch where you fancy and ride back when you're tired. The card pays for itself by the second train.

02

Sentiero Azzurro is partially closed.

The 12 km classic coastal trail has stretches closed for landslides. Manarola-Riomaggiore (Via dell'Amore) reopened 2024 with separate €5 ticket. Corniglia-Manarola has been closed since 2012. Vernazza-Monterosso (3.5 km, hard) and Vernazza-Corniglia (3.5 km, moderate) are usually open. Check parconazionale5terre.it the morning of your hike.

03

Don't day-trip from Florence.

It can be done (3 hr train each way) but you'll get 4 hours on a 12-hour day, in the busiest window. Stay at least one night - Monterosso, Vernazza or Levanto are the easiest bases. La Spezia is 10 minutes south and has cheap hotels and the only proper supermarket; some travellers love it.

04

Eat the food that's here.

Pesto alla Genovese (the real one) was invented up the coast. Trofie al pesto, focaccia di Recco, fritti misti (deep-fried sea), anchovies from Monterosso. Drink Sciacchetrà - the local sweet wine made from the terrace grapes. Skip lasagne, pizza, and anything that sounds Florentine.

05

Wear actual shoes.

Even the village streets are uneven. The trails are technical hiking - loose stone, exposed sections, no shade. Trail runners or proper hiking shoes; flip-flops will hurt you. The park rangers turn back hikers in unsuitable footwear and can fine you.

06

Boats for views, trains for speed.

The Consorzio Marittimo runs ferries Levanto → Monterosso → Vernazza → Manarola → Riomaggiore → Portovenere, April-October. Slower (90 min end-to-end) but the cliffs from the water are unforgettable. €25 day pass or €5-10 individual hops. Cancelled in rough weather.

Questions

Frequently asked

Two full days, three nights. Day 1: explore the two end villages (Monterosso + Riomaggiore) by train, swim, eat. Day 2: hike the Sentiero Azzurro through Vernazza, Corniglia and Manarola. Add a third day for the higher Sanctuary trails or a boat to Portovenere. Day-trippers from La Spezia or Levanto see less, but it works.
Monterosso al Mare has the only proper beach and the most hotel rooms - best for families. Vernazza is the prettiest but rooms are scarce and expensive. Manarola has the best sunset and good Sciacchetrà wine. Riomaggiore is lively at night, well-connected. Corniglia is on a cliff and quiet - the village if you want sleep. Levanto, just north, is the budget base.
€7.50 for 1 day on the Sentiero Azzurro trails; €18.20 for the Treno MS Card (1 day, trails + unlimited trains between the five villages + La Spezia and Levanto). 2-day Treno MS is €33. Children 4-11 €11.20. Buy at any park or train station kiosk, or online. The card is essential if you're hiking the main coastal trail.
Partially. The Manarola-Riomaggiore stretch (Via dell'Amore) reopened in 2024 after landslide repairs - it's now ticketed at €5 separately. Vernazza-Monterosso and Vernazza-Corniglia stretches are usually open. Corniglia-Manarola has been closed since 2012; alternative is the inland Sanctuary trail. Check the park site the morning of your hike.
Trains. The local Cinque Terre Express runs the 5-village + La Spezia + Levanto loop every 15-30 minutes, takes 4 minutes between adjacent villages. Cinque Terre Treno MS card gives unlimited rides. Ferries are scenic but slower and weather-dependent. Cars are banned in the villages and parking is a nightmare - don't drive.
Yes. Download walks over Wi-Fi at your hotel before you head out. Mobile signal between villages on the trails is unreliable. iWander runs entirely on-device once downloaded.
