Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Book the Uffizi and Accademia.

Walk-up queues are 2+ hours in season. Online timed entry skips them entirely. Same for climbing the Duomo - book the combo ticket weeks ahead.

02

Florence is small.

The historic centre is 2 km across. You can walk every famous site in two long mornings. Don't take taxis - you'll miss half the city.

03

Eat lunch at 13:00, not 12:30.

Tuscan kitchens open at 12:30 but trattorias fill at 13:00. Same kitchen, same prices, but the locals start trickling in - more atmosphere.

04

Florence in August empties out.

Locals decamp to the coast. Many family trattorias close. The city is hot, packed with tourists, and missing its soul. Avoid if you can.

05

Best seasons: April–June, September–October.

April for the colour. May for the Iris Garden. September is golden and quiet. November starts to thin out. Christmas markets in December.

06

Climb Piazzale at sunset.

From Ponte alle Grazie it's 15 minutes uphill. Free. The whole city laid out below at golden hour, the Duomo glowing, more romantic than the Vasari Corridor.
