Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Walk the walls at 08:00.

The walls open at 08:00 in summer. The first hour you're nearly alone on the ramparts and the morning light is excellent. By 10:30, cruise tourists are queuing for 30 minutes at Pile Gate and the walk becomes shuffling. After 17:00 is the other window, ahead of sunset.

02

Check the cruise schedule.

3-5 cruise ships can dock at Gruž on a given day, dumping 5,000-15,000 day-trippers from 09:00-15:00. The schedule is published on dubrovnikportauthority.hr. Avoid those hours in the Old Town. If two ships are in, plan a Lokrum or Mount Srđ day instead.

03

Sleep inside the walls.

The Old Town has hotels and apartments inside the medieval walls. €€-€€€ but worth it: at 18:00 the cruise tourists leave and the marble street is yours. Hilton Imperial just outside Pile Gate is the high-end alternative. Lapad (the western suburb) is the budget base, 15-min bus ride.

04

Eat in Lapad, not on the Stradun.

Restaurants on the Stradun are tourist-trap pricing. For real food: Dalmatino (Old Town side street), Pantarul (Lapad), Konoba Toni for fish. Try crni rižot (squid-ink risotto), peka (under-bell slow-roasted), the local malvasija white wine.

05

Game of Thrones tours exist.

Two-hour walking tours from Pile Gate visit the filming locations, €25-35, daily. The Iron Throne replica is at the Lokrum island visitor centre - included with the ferry ticket. Most filming was 2011-2018; the show ended in 2019. The Trsteno Arboretum (King's Landing gardens) is 20 km north, separate visit.

06

Buža is the secret sunset.

'Buža' means 'hole' in Croatian. There are two Buža bars - both are doors cut through the city wall on the south side, opening onto cliffs over the Adriatic. Cocktails, classic drinks, music. The west-facing one (Buža II) is the sunset spot. Find the discreet door from the back streets of the Old Town.
