Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Get to the Acropolis by 8am.

Gates open at 08:00. By 10am the queue is 60 minutes and the rock is shoulder-to-shoulder. By 7pm the sun is brutal in summer. The combined ticket (€30) covers all major archaeological sites for five days.

02

Areopagus Hill is free, next to the Acropolis.

Same view, no ticket, no queue, polished marble (wear grip). Where St Paul preached. The sunrise spot the cruise ships don't visit.

03

Greeks dine at 22:00.

Reservation only after 21:30. Earlier dinners are tourist-pace. Tavernas run until 02:00. Greek Sunday lunch goes from 13:00 to past 17:00 - join it if invited.

04

The Metro is fast and air-conditioned.

Three lines, all stops display the archaeology they unearthed during digging. €1.20 single, €4.10 daily. Airport line is €9 but worth it - 40 minutes vs €40 taxi.

05

Best seasons: April–May, September–October.

July-August is 35°C+, locals leave for the islands. November-March is mild, half-empty, and the Acropolis is yours. Carnival in February. Easter (Orthodox) is the biggest event.

06

Frappé is a stand-up drink.

Greek iced coffee. Order it sketo (no sugar) and milky (me gala). Take it walking. Don't expect a flat white to taste right - this isn't that kind of coffee culture.
