Tapas the way Madrileños do

Cava Baja in La Latina - whole street of tapas bars. Casa Lucio for huevos rotos. Bodega de la Ardosa for vermouth. Casa Revuelta for fried cod. Don't sit down at the first bar - locals walk three to a meal.

Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Madrid eats late.

Lunch 14:00-16:00. Dinner 21:00-23:30. Restaurants serving at 19:30 are for tourists. Aperitivo (vermouth + tapas) bridges the gap from 12:00 - that's where the day starts.

02

The Prado is free in the evening.

Mon-Sat 18:00-20:00, Sun 17:00-19:00 - free entry. Two hours is plenty for Goya, Velázquez and the Bosch. Bring a passport for the queue check.

03

Chocolate con churros is a 04:00 thing.

San Ginés (open 24h since 1894) is where you go after a night out. Locals turn up at dawn. Tourists at 11am. Both are correct.

04

Sunday Rastro is the social event.

Flea market in La Latina, 09:00-15:00. After the stalls, everyone moves to Cava Baja for vermouth. It's been the Sunday ritual for 200 years.

05

Best seasons: April–June, September–October.

July-August: 38°C, locals leave for the coast, half of Madrid closes. December has Christmas lights on Gran Vía and good prices. February has carnival.

06

Walk the long way - it's flatter than it looks.

Madrid feels hilly but the historic centre is mostly flat. You'll walk 25,000 steps without noticing. Wear shoes with grip - the cobbles get slippery in summer storms.
