Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Sleep in a cave-hotel.

The Sassi are now full of cave-hotels - rooms cut into the rock, sometimes 1,000+ years old. €€-€€€. Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is the iconic one. La Dimora di Metello and Locanda di San Martino are mid-range. The experience is essential to understanding Matera; one night minimum.

02

Wear hiking shoes.

Matera is built into a ravine. The Sassi involve hundreds of steps and steep cobbled lanes. There are no flat routes. Polished-leather sandals are dangerous; sneakers are minimum; trail runners or hiking shoes ideal. Don't try this in heels.

03

Sunset at the Belvedere, lit-up Sassi at night.

30-min walk or 5-min taxi to Belvedere Murgia Timone, across the Gravina ravine. The Sassi cliff-face glows orange at sunset then lights up at dusk. The most-photographed view of Matera. Stay until dark - the city becomes a Christmas-card scene from across the canyon.

04

The James Bond chase is a real route.

The 2021 'No Time to Die' opens with the Aston Martin DB5 driving through Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the Sassi. The parachute jump is into Civita's piazza Duomo. The cathedral square shoot-out is at the actual cathedral. Bond walking tours leave from Piazza Vittorio Veneto, 90 min, €25.

05

Eat the local food.Pane di Matera (the high-crust local bread, IGP-protected). Cavatelli con cime di rapa. Peperoni cruschi (crispy dried peppers). Lucanian sausage. Aglianico del Vulture (the local red wine). Vitantonio Lombardo (1 Michelin star) is the splurge. Soul Kitchen and Le Botteghe are honest local choices.

06

Combine with Alberobello.

Alberobello (the trulli town, conical-roofed houses) is 1 hour east. Both UNESCO, both rock-built, both feel ancient. Lecce (Baroque city) is 2 hours south-east. A 3-4 day Puglia + Basilicata circuit from Bari covers all three with a hire car.

Questions

Frequently asked

Yes - the Sassi quarters are car-free and 1.5 km across. But the terrain is the challenge: Matera is built into a ravine. Expect hundreds of steps and steep cobbled lanes. End-to-end walk Sasso Barisano → Civita → Sasso Caveoso is 30-45 min plus stair-climbing. Wear hiking shoes, not sandals.
Two days, one night. Day 1: orientation walk through Sasso Caveoso and the rock churches, sunset from Belvedere Murgia Timone across the ravine. Day 2: Sasso Barisano and Civita, museums, optional Murgia hike to the cave-church frescoes. Day-trippers from Bari see the Sassi for 4 hours and leave - but the magic is overnight when the Sassi light up.
The two ancient rock-hewn quarters - Sasso Caveoso (the older, more troglodytic) and Sasso Barisano (the more 'urban' upper one) - on either side of the Gravina ravine. Inhabited continuously since Palaeolithic times. Houses, churches and stables were cut directly into the soft tufa stone. Officially declared a 'national shame' in 1952; the population was forcibly relocated. Reopened as a UNESCO heritage site since 1993.
The Sassi themselves are free to walk. Individual sites cost €3-6 each: Casa Grotta (cave-house museum) €5, Crypt of the Original Sin (rock church frescoes) €15 with shuttle, San Pietro Barisano €3.50, Madonna delle Virtù & San Nicola dei Greci €5. Combined 'Matera in Vista' ticket €10 covers six sites. Most rock churches are €3.50 individually.
Yes - 'No Time to Die' (2021) opened with a 7-minute chase sequence through the Sassi, including the famous parachute jump and the Aston Martin stunt on the steps. The Mel Gibson 'Passion of the Christ' (2004) and 'Ben-Hur' (2016) also filmed here. Bond walking tours leave Piazza Vittorio Veneto, 90 min, €25.
By car: 1 hour from Bari, 2 hrs from Naples, 4 hrs from Rome. By train + bus: Bari Centrale to Matera Centrale on the FAL railway (1h 30, €5) - the only direct rail link. Direct flixbus / Marozzi coaches from Rome (5 hrs, €25-40). Bari Airport is the nearest international, with shuttles to Matera 1h 15. No airport in Matera itself.
Yes. Download a walk over Wi-Fi at your cave-hotel before you head out. Signal in the Sassi is patchy because of the stone walls. iWander runs entirely on-device once downloaded.
