Da Michele (since 1870, two choices: margherita or marinara). Sorbillo for the Naples-pizza superstar. Di Matteo for fast and friendly. Stick to AVPN-certified pizzerie. Beer or Coca-Cola, never wine.

Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Naples is intense. Lean in.

Loud, chaotic, beautiful. Don't expect order. Stay in the centre and walk. Take a deep breath before crossing a street. Locals will tell you which streets to avoid at night - listen.

02

Pizza margherita = €5.

If a pizzeria is charging €15 in centro storico, walk past it. Real Naples pizza is cheap, fast, and protected by AVPN certification. Order the margherita first; judge everything else from there.

03

Coffee is sacred.

Espresso at the counter, drunk in two seconds. €1. Always 'un caffè' - never 'an espresso'. Caffè sospeso (suspended coffee, pre-paid for a stranger) is a Neapolitan invention.

04

Pickpockets exist. Be a tourist.

Phone in front pocket. Bag across the body. Don't flash cash. Don't get pulled into 'gold ring' scams. Otherwise you're fine - it's not as dangerous as the reputation suggests.

05

Best seasons: April–June, September–October.

Spring is mild, the city blooms, fewer crowds. October is grape harvest. July-August is hot and packed and Italians leave for the islands. November is rainy.

06

Tipping: round up.

Service is often included (coperto = cover charge). 5-10% if you really enjoyed it. Cash on the table - not card.
