Local knowledge
The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.
01
Along the cliffs, past four beaches, two ocean pools. 90 minutes one way, longer with swimming stops. Buses run back from Coogee. Bring water, sunscreen, hat - the path has no shade.
02
One card for trains, ferries, buses, light rail. Tap on, tap off. Get one at the airport or any 7-Eleven. The Manly ferry is the world's best public-transport ride.
03
Australia's minimum wage is high (~AU$24/hr). Tipping is welcome but not expected. 10% is generous in restaurants. Round up for taxis. Nothing at bars or cafés unless table service was great.
04
Australian UV is brutal even on cloudy days. Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, water - always. Slip, Slop, Slap is the national mantra. Don't underestimate it.
05
December-February is hot, packed, expensive. October-November and March-April are mild and uncrowded. June-August is cool (15°C) but harbour-clear and quiet.
06
Many beaches officially close at sunset (no lifeguards, no lights). Coogee and Bondi stay accessible but swim only in patrolled hours. Sharks aren't a real risk; rips are.
