Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The things you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Enter Porta Marina, exit Anfiteatro.

Pompeii slopes east-to-west. Entering at Porta Marina (the main gate from the train) and exiting at the Amphitheatre means you walk downhill all day. Reverse it and you're climbing 35 metres in the afternoon sun. Most tour buses get this wrong.

02

Allow four hours, plan six.

The site is 66 hectares. Two hours covers the Forum and the Lupanar. Four hours is the realistic minimum to add the Theatre, the Baths, House of the Faun, and the Amphitheatre. Six hours adds Villa of the Mysteries, the necropolis, and lunch outside the gate.

03

There is almost no shade.

Plan indoor stops every 20 minutes - the Baths, the bigger houses, the Antiquarium museum. Bring 2 litres of water per person, sunscreen, a hat. July-August midday is unwise; April-May and October are the right months.

04

Some houses rotate open and closed.

The Park rotates which houses are open day-to-day to manage conservation. Don't be surprised if a "must-see" is shut. Check the Park's website the morning of for the day's open list, or ask iWander - the AI knows the current rota.

05

Eat outside the gate.

The Park's café is unremarkable. Walk five minutes to Via Roma in modern Pompei for proper pizza fritta and sfogliatelle. President (Michelin-starred, surprisingly affordable lunch). Or take the Circumvesuviana one stop to Torre Annunziata for the real thing.

06

The plaster casts are real, mostly.

Giuseppe Fiorelli's 1860s technique - inject plaster into the body-shaped cavities in the ash. The casts contain the actual skeletons of the people who died. Garden of the Fugitives is the largest grouping. Treat them as graves; it's the right impulse.

How to visit

Pompeii, sorted in five lines

Tickets, timings, transport - the practical stuff most pages bury.

TICKETS

€22 standard, or €32 combined.

Adult full price €22 (2026). Combined Pompeii + Herculaneum + Oplontis + Boscoreale ticket is €32 and valid 3 days - buy it if you're staying more than one day in the area. EU 18-25: €2. Under 18: free. First Sunday of the month (Oct-Mar) is free but unbearable; skip.

HOURS

09:00-19:00 summer · 09:00-17:00 winter.

Last entry is 90 minutes before closing - 17:30 in summer, 15:30 in winter. Open every day except 25 December and 1 January. Houses inside the site close 30 minutes before the Park does. Arrive at 09:00 sharp or after 14:00 to dodge the cruise wave.

GETTING THERE

Circumvesuviana from Naples, 35 min.

The cheapest, most reliable route. Naples Garibaldi → Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri (€3.20, 35 min). Trains every 30 minutes. Don't get off at "Pompei" - that's the modern town, 1.5 km from the entrance. From Rome: high-speed to Naples (1hr 10), then the Circumvesuviana.

LUGGAGE

Free deposit at Porta Marina.

Backpacks over 30×30×15 cm are not allowed inside the site. Free locker deposit at the Porta Marina entrance, return your token when you leave. The Esedra entrance also has lockers. Big cases are not accepted at either - leave them at your hotel or the Naples station.

ACCESSIBILITY

"Pompeii Per Tutti" - 3 km step-free route.

Most of the site is uneven cobble and there are stepped thresholds in many houses. The marked "Pompeii Per Tutti" route covers the Forum, Macellum, Lupanar, Stabian Baths, House of the Vettii, Theatre, House of Menander - about 3 km, fully accessible. Map free at the entrance.

SAVE TIME

Book ahead, skip the queue.

July-October queues at Porta Marina hit 60 minutes by 11:00. Book the timed-entry ticket on the Park's own site (pompeiisites.org) - €1.50 booking fee, no queue, pick your half-hour slot. Third-party resellers charge €10 markup for the same ticket; don't.

Questions

Frequently asked

Four hours is the realistic minimum to see the headline sights - Forum, House of the Faun, Lupanar, Stabian Baths, Theatre, Amphitheatre. A full day (6-7 hours) lets you add Villa of the Mysteries and the eastern necropolis. The site is 66 hectares: bigger than most people expect.
Self-guided is the smart move. Pompeii's signage is sparse and rooms are unlabelled; a written guide or audio tour explains what you're seeing. iWander's AI walks build a custom route in 30 seconds in 9 languages, then narrate as you walk - cheaper and more flexible than a 3-hour group tour.
Open at 09:00 sharp, or arrive after 14:00. The cruise-ship groups pour in around 10:30 and leave by 13:30. Last entry is 90 minutes before closing - 17:30 in summer, 15:30 in winter. April-May and October are coolest; July-August is brutal and shadeless.
€22 adult standard entry (2026). Combined ticket with Herculaneum, Oplontis and Boscoreale is €32 and valid 3 days. Free first Sunday of the month (October-March only) - busiest day of the year, avoid unless you love queues. Under-18s free, EU 18-25 reduced €2.
Partly. The site is uneven, cobbled, and exposed. There is a 3 km accessible "Pompeii Per Tutti" route covering the Forum, House of the Vettii and Theatre. Take the main Decumanus (Via dell'Abbondanza) to limit climbs. Trainers with grip essential - the original Roman pavements are polished smooth.
Yes, but it's a long day. Herculaneum is smaller (1 hour minimum, 2-3 hours ideal) and 20 minutes by Circumvesuviana train from Pompeii. Most visitors do Herculaneum first (it opens at 08:30), grab lunch in Ercolano, then arrive at Pompeii by 13:00 when crowds thin.
Yes. Download a tour over Wi-Fi before you enter the site - signal inside is patchy and the Park's own Wi-Fi is unreliable. iWander tours run entirely on-device once downloaded.
