Cross the Bosphorus.

20-minute ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy costs €0.50 with an Istanbulkart. Best public transport ride in the world. Do it at sunset.

Buy an Istanbulkart on day one.

Single card for ferries, trams, metro, buses. €1 deposit at any kiosk, top up as you go. Trips cost €0.50, an unlimited day card is €4.

Hagia Sophia is now a mosque.

Free entry, but separate from prayer times. Cover shoulders, scarves provided. Topkapı Palace and Basilica Cistern need timed tickets - book online.

Bargaining is expected in the Grand Bazaar.

Start at 40% of asking price. Walk away if they won't budge. Outside the bazaar, prices are fixed. Don't haggle at restaurants or in fixed-price shops.

Best seasons: April–June, September–October.

July-August is hot and humid. December is cold but light, the Bosphorus quiet. Ramadan (varies) is special - waiting for iftar in a courtyard with locals is unforgettable.

Turkish breakfast is an event.

Kahvaltı runs 09:00-13:00 weekends. Twenty small plates: cheeses, olives, jams, eggs, tomatoes, bread. Order one for two people. Expect to be there 2 hours.
