What kind of walk do you fancy?

Six shortcuts to the Vienna you didn't know you wanted to see.

The proper coffeehouse circuit

Café Central (Trotsky played chess here). Sperl (untouched since 1880). Hawelka (bohemian, Klimt drank here). Order a Melange and a slice of Sachertorte. Don't apologise to the waiter - they're meant to be grumpy.

Hidden gem: the Hundertwasserhaus

An apartment block by Friedensreich Hundertwasser - undulating floors, trees growing out of windows, no straight lines. In the 3rd district, 15 minutes from the centre. Free to look from outside (you can't go in - people actually live there).

In the rain

Kunsthistorisches Museum is one of the world's great art collections. Belvedere for Klimt. Albertina for the prints. Or settle into a coffeehouse with a newspaper - Wiener coffeehouses are protected UNESCO heritage, and you can stay all afternoon for €5.

Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Coffee in a Vienna café is rented time.

Order one Melange, sit for three hours, read the papers stacked on wooden racks. Nobody will rush you - this is the actual Wiener culture, not a stereotype.

02

The Ring is a 5 km loop.

You can walk around the entire Innere Stadt boundary on the Ringstrasse - past Parliament, Rathaus, Opera, museums, Stadtpark - in 90 minutes. The Ringbahn tram does it for the price of a single ticket.

03

Wienerschnitzel is veal, not pork.

Pork is "Schnitzel Wiener Art" (Vienna style). The real Wienerschnitzel costs more for a reason. Figlmüller does both. Bring an appetite - they fill the plate.

04

Heuriger are the wine taverns.

Suburban inns serving the year's wine - traditionally only when a pine branch is hung outside the door. Grinzing (19th district) is the famous one; Stammersdorf (21st) is quieter and more local.

05

Best seasons: April–June, September–October.

December is magic - Christmas markets at Rathaus, Maria-Theresien-Platz, Spittelberg. July-August is hot and museum tourists are everywhere. Avoid August unless you want empty restaurants (locals decamp).

06

Public transport is excellent and on the honour system.

U-Bahn, tram, bus - all on one ticket. €2.40 single, €8 daily. No gates - validate at the machine when you board. Inspectors do check, fine is €105.
