Local knowledge

What we'd tell you on day one

The stuff you only learn after you've walked it.

01

Stay overnight. The day-trippers ruin it.

Krumlov is the most-day-tripped town in Czechia. From 10:00 to 17:00 it's wall-to-wall Prague coach groups. After 18:00 they leave and the town becomes the medieval river-bend it actually is - empty cobbles, lit castle, locals at the brewery. Even one night transforms the visit.

02

Book the Baroque Theatre tour ahead.

The 1766 theatre is one of only three intact 18th-century theatres in the world - the others are at Drottningholm (Sweden) and Gripsholm. Separate ticket from the castle, only 25 visitors per slot, very limited English-language tours. Book on castle.ckrumlov.cz weeks ahead.

03

Climb the Castle Tower at 09:00.

The painted tower opens at 09:00. The view from the top - river bend, Old Town rooftops, the church spire - is the classic Krumlov shot. By 11:00 the queue is 30 minutes. Get there early and you have it to yourself.

04

Eat Czech food, drink Czech beer.

Krčma U Dwau Maryí is the touristy-but-authentic medieval cellar (whole pigs roasted over a fire). Magistr u Maltézského řádu is the locals' beer-and-svickova spot. The Eggenberg Brewery has its own tap room (Pivnice Eggenberg). Skip restaurants on Latrán street - tourist prices for mediocre food.

05

Raft the Vltava.

The river loops around the town in a near-perfect horseshoe. Several outfits on Latrán rent inflatable rafts for the day - CZK 700-1,500. Standard route: bus 20 min upriver to Rožmberk, raft 2-3 hrs back to town through forest. Children welcome, life-jackets included, no rapids.

06

The bears are real.

The Bear Moat below the castle has been home to live bears since 1707 - a Rosenberg family tradition. Currently two: Marie Terezie and Kateřina. Visible from the Cloak Bridge above. Genuine Czech tradition; controversial but well-cared-for.

Yes - the Old Town and castle are entirely car-free and 600m across. End-to-end is 15 minutes on foot. Cobblestones throughout; comfortable shoes essential. The castle gardens add a 30-minute loop. Cars must park at the perimeter lots.
One night, two days. Day 1: castle tour, Egon Schiele museum, Old Town. Day 2: rafting on the Vltava, the Baroque Theatre, a brewery tour. Day-tripping from Prague is doable but you only see the town in its busiest hours - the magic happens after 18:00 when buses leave.
The castle grounds and gardens are free. Tours of the interior: CZK 240 (~$10) per tour, separate tours for Tour I (Renaissance + Baroque), Tour II (Schwarzenberg apartments), and the Baroque Theatre (CZK 250 separate). Castle tower CZK 60. Buy at the castle ticket office on the day - English-language slots fill up by midday.
May-June or September. July-August is hot, crowded with day-trippers from Prague, and accommodation triples in price. October has the Five-Petalled Rose Festival (medieval reenactment week). December has the Christmas market on Náměstí Svornosti. Winter is magical but the castle interior closes November-March.
By bus: Student Agency / RegioJet from Prague Florenc to Český Krumlov - 3 hrs direct, CZK 250-350 (~$15). Hourly buses. By train: 4 hrs via České Budějovice change, less convenient. Day tours from Prague run €40-60 including transport and a guide. Driving 2.5 hrs on the D3.
Yes - the Vltava flows in a horseshoe loop around the town and is gently rafted in summer. Operators on Latrán street rent inflatable rafts for 2-6 people, CZK 700-1,500/day, including paddles and life jackets. The classic route is 4 hrs from Vyšší Brod or 2 hrs from Rožmberk to the centre of town. Children welcome.
Yes. Download a walk over Wi-Fi at your hotel before you head out. Signal in the town is fine but mobile data isn't worth roaming. iWander runs entirely on-device once downloaded.
