Most central places take cards. Milk bars (bar mleczny) and old-school market stalls are cash. €1 ≈ 4.30 PLN. ATMs everywhere - use Euronet without fees.

Milk bars are the secret.

Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą, Tomasza, Akropol. Government-subsidised canteens from the communist era. Pierogi, soup, schnitzel for €3-5. Open weekdays for lunch.

Pierogi has rules.

Ruskie (potato + cheese), z mięsem (meat), z grzybami (mushroom). Boiled traditional, fried for crisp. Best at Przystanek Pierogarnia or Pierogarnia Krakowiacy.

Auschwitz needs booking.

60 km west. Free entry but mandatory free booking for the busy mornings. Allow a full day - 2 hr there, 3-4 hr visit, 2 hr back. Tour operators bundle transport.

Best seasons: May–September.

Spring is blossoms in Planty park. December for the Christmas market. Avoid August Sunday holidays when everything closes. January-February is cold and quiet.

Tipping: 10% in restaurants.

Hand it to the waiter or include in card. Milk bars and bars don't expect a tip. Don't leave coins on the table.
